The Fantasy Wrecker – Week 14

The playoffs start this week, so I thought I would go over some Dos and Don’ts for the home stretch:

Do your research. There’s little room for error, and one bad matchup can ruin your entire season.

Don’t forget about your family, though. It’s a busy time of year and you don’t want to have to explain to your wife why you’re hiding in the laundry room with your iPad while she entertains your friends and family at your Christmas party. That’s not a good way to have a happy holiday season.

Do your best to keep your emotions in check. Remember, fantasy football is supposed to be fun. You don’t want to punch a hole in your wall and give your kids a story to tell a therapist in twenty years.

Don’t get crazy with your lineup. As Matthew Berry says, start your studs. Don’t sit Antonio Brown because you have a hunch about Terrance Williams or you dreamed about Willie Snead. Weirdo. If you want to win, start your best players.

Let’s get to Week 14:

Three Players Who Will Wreck Your Opponents This Week:

Tyrod Taylor, QB, Buffalo —Taylor is facing an Eagles defense that has allowed the third most points to quarterbacks this year and has played really well the past two weeks. If you’re not afraid of the inevitable let down that comes with rooting for the Bills, Taylor is a good pick up this week.

Shaun Draughn, RB, San Francisco—No one’s sure how to pronounce his last name, but Draughn is getting plenty of touches and is facing the Browns defense, which allows everyone to run all over them. He’s probably available in your league.

Allen Hurns, WR, Jacksonville—The Colts’ Vontae Davis will probably lock down Allen Robinson, which will turn Hurns loose on Greg Toler and the rest of Indianapolis’ suspect secondary. The Colts have allowed the third most points to wide receivers this year.

Three Players Who Will Wreck Your Team This Week:

Derek Carr, QB, Oakland—Not only is Carr facing the tough Broncos defense, he seems to be fading a little as the season progresses. You can probably find a better option on your bench or the waiver wire.

Jeremy Hill, RB, Cincinnati—The Steelers have allowed the second fewest points to running backs this year and Hill is in a timeshare with Giovanni Bernard. I also think this game is a shootout, and Bernard gets more snaps when the Bengals are in passing mode.

Kamar Aiken, WR, Baltimore—Aiken will draw Richard Sherman on Sunday and he’s not talented enough to overcome a lockdown corner like that. He’ll struggle, along with the entire Ravens offense.

The Guy Who’s Wrecking My Fantasy Season This Week:

Me. I’m the guy. I tried to get cute and start Jay “Just Fire the Ball in Between Three Defenders and Hope for the Best” Cutler instead of just sticking with Blake Bortles. What happened? Bortles had the best game of his career and Cutler did an uncanny Ryan Leaf impersonation. Maybe I should stop tinkering with my lineup and get out of my own way.

Ben Zajdel is a contributor. You can follow him on Twitter at @bzajdel. His last name would be a great Scrabble word.
